Populated by 42.9 million people, Uganda is located in East-Central Africa. It is Africa\u2019s largest refugee-hosting country with a million refugees, most of them women and children.<\/p>\n
The most important source of livelihood is agriculture; approximately 70 percent of the workforce works in agriculture. Ugandan women participate in business life more than women in similar countries, however, only 16 percent of agricultural businesses are owned by women, and merely 7 percent of the women own land.<\/p>\n
Women\u2019s Bank has operated in the country since 2007. The aim is to support women\u2019s small businesses through saving and loan groups and entrepreneurship training.<\/p>\n
Currently we are supporting women\u2019s employment and entrepreneurship near the country\u2019s capital, Kampala, in the rural area of Mityana. This is also where Women\u2019s Bank\u2019s first social poultry business, Chiggi, operates.<\/p>\n
Not only do farmers learn new farming techniques, but they can also sell their maize harvest to the poultry farm, which operates based on the principles of sustainable development. This contract farming has provided women with stable incomes while also benefiting the poultry business.<\/p>\n
Women\u2019s savings and loan groups, as well as vocational training programs, have proven to be an effective way to enable women to develop other sources of income.<\/p>\n
